Artist in Residence

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts funds the Artist in Residence Program, an initiative that brings artists into Alberta schools to enrich school programs and achieve curricular goals.  The collaborative nature of this program brings experienced artists into school environments to share their artistics passion, skills, knowledge and creativity with students and teachers.

January 2015 brought professional storyteller Bethany Ellis to Leo Nickerson School.

Students in Kindergarten to Grade Three were entertained and enthralled with the stories Bethany brought to life.  Students in Grades Four to Six experienced the storytelling experience in greater depth as they spent an entire day with Bethany, becoming Storytellers themselves.  As part of their day, the students hosted a Storytelling Fair with younger classes and parents as their audience.

The students of Ecole Leo Nickerson School worked with artist Stan Phelps on Graphic Novels throughout the month of April.  Students learned how they can use basic principles of composition to visually tell a story.  Stan also painted a mural to commemorate our school’s 50th anniversary.

The staff and students at Leo Nickerson are forever thankful to the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Friends of Leo Nickerson for their generous support of the Artist In Residence program and the various projects we’ve done over the years.
