School Council

Who We Are

The school council is a collective association of parents, teachers, principals, staff and community representative(s) who work together to promote the well-being and effectiveness of all stakeholders in the school community and thereby enhance student learning. A school council is a means to facilitate collaboration among all education partners in the local school.

What We Do

We facilitate the development of a common vision for the school. Members work together to facilitate communication, planning and resource allocation regarding priorities and programs that are needed to meet the expectations of the local school community.

One focus of the school council is cultural enrichment for all students. The council, along with the fundraising group called the Friends of Leo Nickerson, works hard to bring school-wide presentations by such groups as the Alberta Dance Troupe,The Alberta Opera Society, Evergreen Theatre, L’Unithéatre, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Drug Awareness and Resistance (DARE) program, Artist-in-Residence program and author visits. The Friends of Leo Nickerson also strongly supports the school with funding for audio-visual equipment; concert staging, lighting and risers; playground enhancement; and other projects which enrich the school experience for the students.

A message from Leo Nickerson School Council Chair (November 23,2021)

I wish everyone in the Leo Nickerson School community well this holiday season. As new Chair of School Council I wanted to introduce myself. I have one child who has graduated from the French Immersion program and two who are currently enrolled. I am a post-secondary educator (Biological Sciences) and do research on teaching and learning. I believe strongly in the importance of universal quality education that is inclusive of all students.

Thank-you to the parents who have been engaged with School Council so far this year and welcome to our new Co-Chair Ruta Grigaliuniene, and Secretary Jessika Clark. On behalf of Council, I would also like to express a huge thanks to our dedicated Friends of Leo Nickerson parents who continue to fundraise for our school community at a time where we are all stretched thin.

School Councils are mandated by the Alberta Education Act to ensure parents have a voice in student learning. They promote communication and allow parents to provide input into school decisions as well as to engage in advocacy to ensure the best possible learning experience for all students. We invited Education Minister Adriana LaGrange and MLAs Dale Nally (St. Albert-Morinville), Sarah Hoffman (Education Critic), and Marie Renaud (St. Albert) to attend council to speak to us about the importance of a well-funded education system. Ms. Renaud and Ms. Hoffman joined us in our September meeting. We are working on bylaws for School Council and discussing ways to support the school in addition to our regular activities. We are considering co-writing a land acknowledgement that is meaningful to our community, providing input into the Parent Handbook, and writing letters of advocacy on issues such as curriculum support and transportation costs.

We meet online at 7:00 PM the fourth Monday of every month and all parents are welcome.
